Rory and the Cozy Cave Sleepover

Rory loved Grandma Eleanor very much, but the thought of sleeping over still made Rory’s tummy feel like a bucket of buzzing bees. "I packed my favorite dinosaur stuffie, Rex," Rory told the fuzzy green toy, zipping up the suitcase. "But what if I miss home?"

Mommy and Daddy gave Rory a big hug outside Grandma Eleanor’s bright blue door. Rory squeezed Rex tight and watched the car drive away. The buzzing in Rory’s tummy grew louder.

The door opened, and there was Grandma Eleanor! She didn't hug right away. She winked and pointed down the hall. "I heard a special guest needed a special headquarters," she whispered.

Grandma Eleanor led Rory into the living room, which was covered in blankets and pillows. It was a giant, magnificent, shimmering fort! "We call this The Cozy Cave," she announced. Rory’s jaw dropped. The buzzing bees flew right out the window!

"Now, a cave needs fuel," Grandma Eleanor said, tying a flour-dusted apron around Rory's waist. "Today, we make the Famous Chocolate Chip Secrets." They dumped sugar and butter into a bowl, and Rory got to lick the spoon (the very best part).

After the cookies were baked and cooled, Grandma Eleanor pulled out a giant, dusty album. "Want to see Mommy when she was seven?" Rory giggled at the picture of a tiny girl with big glasses trying to climb a very tall tree.

Dinner was Macaroni-and-Cheese towers, eaten right on the floor of The Cozy Cave. When the sun went down, a quiet, lonely feeling started to creep back into Rory’s heart. It felt lonely without the familiar sounds of home.

Grandma Eleanor brought two mugs of warm milk and climbed right into the fort with Rory. "Sometimes," she said softly, "being away from home feels big and empty."

"But look!" she pointed to the ceiling of the fort, where she had taped tiny glow-in-the-dark stars. "Love doesn't stay in one place, Rory. It travels with you. It’s right here, sparkling over our heads."

Rory woke up to the smell of pancakes, feeling happy and snug. The buzzing bees were gone. Rory realized that Grandma Eleanor’s house wasn’t just a house—it was a new kind of home, filled with special love and Chocolate Chip Secrets.
