Sophia woke up with a wiggle and a giggle. She peeked at her calendar and saw a big red circle around the date. It was April First! "Today is the day," she whispered to her teddy bear. "The day of the Great Giggles!" She put on her slippers and crept toward the door like a tiny, quiet mouse.
Sophia tiptoed into the kitchen. The house was very still. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a handful of tiny, wiggly googly eyes. With a mischievous grin, she began to stick them onto everything she could find. "The snacks are watching," she giggled, sticking two eyes onto a shiny red apple.
A few minutes later, Dad, whose name was Bram, walked into the kitchen yawning. He reached for his favorite bowl of cereal, but when he tried to scoop up a spoonful, the spoon bounced right off! Sophia had frozen his milk in the freezer overnight. "My breakfast is a skating rink!" Bram cried out in surprise.
Next came Mom, whose name was Linnea. She walked to the refrigerator to get the orange juice. When she pulled the door open, she let out a loud gasp. Every single egg in the carton, every jar of jam, and even the tall carton of milk had a pair of silly eyes staring right back at her!
Sophia hopped out from her hiding spot. "April Fools!" she shouted, throwing her arms wide. Linnea started to laugh so hard she had to lean against the counter. "Oh, Sophia! I thought the mustard was looking at me!" Linnea reached out and gave Sophia a playful squeeze on the shoulder.
Sophia’s brother, Casper, was the next target. He was still sleepy as he tried to slide his feet into his favorite sneakers to go outside and play. But no matter how hard he pushed, his feet wouldn't go in! Sophia had stuffed the toes of his shoes with soft, colorful fuzzy socks.
"Your feet must have grown ten sizes overnight, Casper!" Sophia teased as she skipped into the hallway. Casper pulled a bunch of neon green socks out of his shoe and began to grin. "You got me, Sophia! I thought I was turning into a giant!" He tossed a fuzzy sock at her playfully.
Later that morning, Bram went to wash his hands in the bathroom. When he turned the handle, the water didn't look clear at all. It came out in a bright, bubbly shade of ocean blue! Sophia had hidden a tiny bit of blue food coloring inside the faucet. "I'm washing my hands in the sea!" Bram shouted.
The whole family gathered in the living room, and the house was filled with the sound of happy voices. Linnea and Bram looked at each other and shook their heads. The kitchen was full of eyes, the breakfast was frozen, and the water was blue, but the house had never felt more cheerful.
"You are the Queen of April Fools," Casper said, giving Sophia a high-five. They all shared a giant family hug, laughing about the frozen milk and the staring eggs. Sophia felt very happy. It wasn't just a day for pranks; it was a day for making everyone she loved smile.
