Grumble the gray wolf stood tall at the biggest wooden stall in the market, his fluffy tail twitching slightly. He was supposed to be buying rutabagas, but that was proving difficult when three very small kittens were in charge of distractions. Grumble sighed, placing the heavy copper coins on the counter. "Now, Pip," he murmured, "stay put."
But Pip wasn't the problem. Not yet. Off to the side, Moss the tabby kitten was having a very serious moment with a magnificent loaf of hearth bread. He held it close, inhaling the yeasty aroma. Meanwhile, Tumble the orange kitten, quick and impulsive, was focused entirely on a single, high-up, gleaming red apple.
“There we are,” Grumble said, picking up the heavy brown bag of flour. He turned to load it into his basket, ready to move on to the next item on the list: three carrots. That’s when he saw it: the wobble. The apple stack wobbled precariously as Tumble made one final, desperate lunge.
Before the entire fruit display could cascade onto the cobblestones, Grumble moved with surprising speed. He gently scooped Tumble up just as the little paw brushed the apple. "Tumble, my dear chaos creator," Grumble rumbled softly. Moss, startled by the near-disaster, finally let go of the bread, looking up at Grumble.
“Remember the mission,” Grumble reminded them, pulling a very crumpled piece of parchment from his pocket. He held the list up high. “Rutabagas? Check. Next is the savory part of the stew. We need three carrots and a bunch of herbs. No shiny apples, no giant bread hugs, until the work is done.”
With Tumble safely tucked into the basket beside Pip, and Moss holding onto Grumble’s thick gray tail, they navigated the bustling market path. Past the warm pies, past the squeaky toys, past the glittery ribbons. But as they neared the herb stall, Pip spotted something far more interesting than parsley.
It wasn’t shiny, but it fluttered! A huge blue and yellow butterfly danced lazily over a patch of lavender. Grumble paused to pay for the thyme, and in that single moment of distraction, Tumble leaped from the basket and shot off across the path, chasing the beautiful winged creature.
Grumble caught Tumble just before he tumbled head-over-paws into a basket of onions. “Oh, my little whirlwind,” Grumble breathed, holding Tumble securely against his chest. Pip immediately dismounted and began grooming the large wolf’s ear, a calming mechanism.
The mission was complete. The basket held rutabagas, carrots, herbs, and even the giant loaf of bread (Grumble had secretly bought it for Moss). As a reward, they sat on a quiet bench outside the market bakery and shared one enormous, sweet berry tart. Crumbs covered everyone.
Finally, the sun began to dip low, painting the woodland path in gold. Grumble walked steadily home, the weight of the full basket comforting on his back. Pip, exhausted from her supervisory duties, was sound asleep inside, nestled safe and warm among the groceries. Grumble’s tired, but happy, amber eyes kept watch over his precious, chaotic little crew.
