Priya loved her Dada-ji very, very much. He had the kindest eyes and always told the best stories. But one day, Dada-ji went to a peaceful sleep and didn’t wake up. Priya felt a big, empty space in her heart. She missed his laughter and his warm hugs.
Amma, Priya’s grandmother, saw her sadness. She gently sat beside Priya. 'My dear,' Amma said softly, 'Dada-ji is in a beautiful place now. And even though we can't see him, we can still show him our love and respect through a special ceremony called Shraddh. It helps his soul find peace and reminds us of all the wonderful memories we shared.'
Amma explained that the first few days were for grieving and remembering. On the tenth day, called 'Dashagatra,' they went to the sacred ghats by the river. 'Here,' Amma explained, 'we offer 'pindas' – small balls of rice and sesame seeds. It's like giving Dada-ji a farewell gift, helping his soul prepare for its journey to the next world.'
The eleventh day was for inviting learned Brahmins to their home. 'We offer them food and gifts,' Amma said, 'as a way of honoring them and seeking their blessings for Dada-ji’s journey. It’s believed that what we offer to them reaches our ancestors.'
On the twelfth day, they performed the 'Sapindikarana Shraddh.' Amma explained, 'This is a very important day, Priya. It’s when Dada-ji’s individual soul is believed to merge with the souls of his ancestors, becoming part of the larger family in the spiritual realm. It’s like he’s joining a big, loving family reunion in the sky.'
The thirteenth day was for 'Shanti Paath,' a prayer for peace. Family and friends gathered to offer their condolences and share stories about Dada-ji. Priya felt a warmth spread through her heart as she listened to everyone remember his kindness and wisdom. It felt good to share their love and sorrow together.
A whole year passed. The seasons changed, and new flowers bloomed. But Priya never forgot Dada-ji. When the first anniversary of his passing arrived, Amma said, 'It’s time for the annual Shraddh, Priya. This is how we continue to honor his memory every year, keeping his spirit alive in our hearts and homes.'
This time, Priya felt more confident. She helped Amma arrange the offerings, light the diyas, and chant the prayers. Each action felt like a whispered 'thank you' to Dada-ji for all the love he had given. She felt a strong, invisible thread connecting her to him, even now.
Priya realized that Shraddh wasn't just about sadness or saying goodbye. It was about remembering, about gratitude, and about the endless love that connects families, even across different worlds. It was a beautiful way to keep Dada-ji's stories, his wisdom, and his love alive.
And so, every year, Priya and her family honored Dada-ji. They knew that love never truly ends, and that through Shraddh, they were not just remembering the past, but nurturing the bonds of family and tradition for generations to come. Dada-ji's love continued to shine brightly, like a thousand little diyas, guiding their way.
