Amelia was the perfect roommate. She was kind, funny, and always shared her snacks. But Amelia had a secret, a cluttered, ceramic secret that lived in the corners of their apartment.
Her secret was mugs. Mugs she used for tea, coffee, and even water. Once their job was done, they were abandoned. They perched on bookshelves, hid under sofas, and stood guard by the bathroom sink.
The forgotten mugs, who secretly called themselves "The Mugwumps," were growing restless. "I once held a lovely chamomile tea," sighed a mug with a picture of a cat on it. "I fueled an all-night study session!" boasted a tall, striped mug. "Now we just hold dust."
One Tuesday night, the Mugwumps decided to act. Their leader, a sturdy blue mug named Chip (because of the tiny chip on his rim), gathered the troops. "Tonight," he declared, "we march!"
As Amelia slept, dreaming of puppies and pizza, the Mugwumps began their journey. With a series of quiet *clinks* and *shuffles*, they slid from their dusty hiding spots and moved across the floor.
They formed a great circle around her bed, a silent, ceramic army. There were tall ones, short ones, wide ones, and skinny ones. They stood handle to handle, waiting for the sun.
The next morning, Amelia’s alarm buzzed. She yawned, stretched, and swung her feet over the side of the bed. *CLANK!* She looked down. A hundred little mugs seemed to be staring right back at her.
Chip, their brave leader, stood on the pillow next to her. "We have demands!" he squeaked in a tiny voice. "We want soap! We want water! We want to go home... to the kitchen cupboard!"
Amelia stared at the mug, then at the floor, and then she burst out laughing. An army of grumpy mugs! Carefully, she began to pick them up, creating a path through the crowd. "Okay, okay, I get it," she said, her arms filling with ceramics.
From that day on, Amelia's secret changed. It was no longer a secret of clutter, but a secret of care. The Mugwumps were always washed and returned to their cupboard, clean and happy, and never had to march again.
