Max and Mia were excited! Today, they were going to the grocery store with Mom. "Remember," Mom said, "we're going to talk about needs and wants."
"What’s the difference?" asked Mia. "Needs are what we must have to live, like food and clothes. Wants are things we would like to have, but we can live without them," explained Mom.
In the produce aisle, Max spotted shiny apples and juicy oranges. “These are needs,” he said, picking up an apple. “We need fruits to stay healthy!”
“Great job!” cheered Mia. “But look at those chocolate-covered strawberries. They’re a want. They look yummy, but we can skip them today.”
Next, they wandered to the snack aisle. Max saw chips and cookies. “These are wants, right?” he asked.
“Yes,” said Mom. “But we can use our allowance to buy one treat if we have enough saved up.” Mia excitedly pulled out her piggy bank. “I have some money saved! Let’s see if we can buy a snack!”
In the cereal aisle, Max spotted his favorite sugary cereal. “Can we get this?” he asked eagerly.
Mom smiled. “That’s a want, sweetie. How about we choose a healthy cereal for breakfast and save the sugary one for a special treat?” “Okay!” agreed Max. “That sounds smart!”
At the checkout, Max and Mia looked at their cart filled with healthy foods. “What about a treat?” Max asked.
Mom said, “We can use your saved money for a small treat today, but remember to save a little for next time too!” Max chose a small pack of cookies and felt proud. “I made a smart choice!”
Max and Mia learned that grocery shopping was not just about picking things. It was about understanding needs and wants, making smart choices, and using their money wisely. “Next time, let’s save more so we can pick a bigger treat!” Max said. “Great idea!” Mia replied. “Shopping is fun when we make good choices!”
