The Cloud in Elara's Sky

Elara loved sunny days. Her laughter was like sunshine, bright and warm, filling every corner of her world. She loved to draw, to read, and to explore the woods behind her house, always with a skip in her step.

But sometimes, a tiny, wispy cloud would appear, just at the edge of her sunny sky. It wasn't a storm cloud, not yet, but a soft, grey puff that seemed to dim the edges of her brightest moments.

Slowly, day by day, that little cloud grew. It wasn't always there, but when it was, it made her favorite things feel a little less exciting. Drawing felt like too much effort, and the woods seemed quiet, not inviting.

The cloud became heavier, sometimes making it hard to get out of bed in the morning. Laughter felt far away, and even talking to her best friends felt like trying to shout through a thick, damp fog.

The cloud made her want to hide. She started spending more time alone, feeling like the cloud was a secret she couldn't share, a heavy blanket that kept her apart from everyone else.

Her teacher, Ms. Clara, was known for her kind eyes and her ability to notice things others might miss. She saw the quietness in Elara, the way her sunshine had faded.

One afternoon, Ms. Clara found Elara sitting by herself during recess. She knelt down, her voice soft as a whisper. "Elara," she said, "I've noticed you haven't been quite yourself lately. Is everything okay?"

Elara looked down at her shoes. How could she explain the cloud? How could she describe something she couldn't even see, only feel? "I just... everything feels heavy," she mumbled, tears welling in her eyes.

Ms. Clara nodded. "Sometimes, our feelings can feel like a heavy cloud, Elara. It's called depression, and it means our brain needs a little extra help, just like a sprained ankle needs a bandage. Many people feel these clouds, and it's brave to talk about them."

"There are people who can help us understand these clouds and find ways to make them lighter," Ms. Clara continued. "We can talk to your parents, or a counselor. You don't have to carry this cloud alone." A tiny spark of light flickered in Elara's heart. Maybe, just maybe, the sunshine wasn't completely gone.
