Leo loved going to the community center. There was always so much to see and do! One sunny afternoon, a special event was happening, and Leo saw someone new on the stage.
This person was standing next to a speaker, but instead of talking, they were moving their hands in beautiful, quick motions. What could they be doing?
Leo, full of questions, tugged on his mom's sleeve. "Mom, what is that person doing with their hands?" he whispered. His mom smiled. "That's Ms. Anya, a sign language interpreter," she explained.
Later, Leo saw Ms. Anya by herself. He bravely walked over. "Excuse me, Ms. Anya," he said. "What is a sign language interpreter?"
Ms. Anya knelt down. "I help people who can't hear communicate with people who can," she signed and spoke. "I use my hands, body, and face to show words and ideas. It's called sign language!"
Just then, a girl with bright eyes walked by. Ms. Anya waved to her with a special sign. The girl waved back, signing something quickly. "This is Maya," Ms. Anya told Leo. "She uses sign language to talk."
Leo felt a little shy, but Ms. Anya helped them. "Maya, this is Leo. He wants to learn about sign language!" Ms. Anya signed. Maya smiled widely.
Maya then signed, "Hello!" Ms. Anya translated for Leo. "Would you like to learn how to sign 'hello'?" Ms. Anya asked Leo. Leo nodded excitedly. Ms. Anya showed him how to make the sign.
Soon, Leo and Maya were playing together, with Ms. Anya helping them understand each other. Leo learned that even without words, they could share stories and laughter. It was a wonderful way to connect!
Leo went home feeling happy. He had learned that sign language interpreters help everyone belong, and that understanding different ways to communicate makes the world a much bigger, friendlier place for everyone.
