Rusty the little red truck wasn't the biggest or the shiniest toy in the playroom, but he had the biggest heart. One day, a bright poster appeared on the toy box: "THE GREAT TOY RACE! Trophies! Glory!" Rusty's engine gave a hopeful little sputter.
"You?" boomed a deep voice. A giant, shiny blue monster truck named Mauler rolled up, his huge tires making the floor tremble. "You're just a rusty little pickup! You can't race against us!"
Another monster truck, a green one named Rumble, laughed. "He'll fall apart at the starting line!" But Rusty just revved his little engine. "I'm faster than I look," he said.
The day of the race arrived! The track wound all around the playroom. "GO!" shouted a toy soldier. The monster trucks roared away in a cloud of dust, leaving Rusty far behind.
The first obstacle was the Blocky Mountains, a huge pile of wooden building blocks. Mauler and Rumble powered right over the top, sending blocks flying.
Rusty was too small to climb over. He saw a small gap between two of the bottom blocks. With a whir and a wiggle, he squeezed right through the tunnel at the bottom of the mountain!
Next came the Wobbly Bridge, two rulers laid across a gap between two books. Mauler tried to cross, but his weight made the rulers bend and groan. "I'm too heavy!" he grumbled, and had to back up.
Rusty, being light and careful, drove steadily across the ruler bridge. Tip-tap-tip-tap went his little tires. He was now in the lead!
Rusty zoomed past the toy dinosaur jungle and around the crayon canyon. He could see the finish line, a banner made from a red ribbon, stretched between two teddy bears. He puttered as fast as he could!
Rusty crossed the finish line first! The crowd of toys cheered. Mauler and Rumble finally chugged in, looking surprised. "Wow," said Mauler. "You won! I guess being the biggest isn't always the best." Rusty just smiled. He knew that a clever mind and a brave heart were the most powerful engine of all.
