Leo and the Nighttime Noises

Leo packed his favorite rocket ship pajamas and his stuffed bear, Barnaby. He was going to his grandma’s house for his very first sleepover. "Are you ready for your big adventure?" his dad asked with a smile. Leo gave a big nod, but inside, his tummy felt like it was full of fizzy bubbles.

Grandma’s house was cozy and smelled like cinnamon and old books. During the day, it was the best place in the world. Leo and Grandma built a tall tower of blocks, watered the tomatoes in the garden, and ate three cookies each.

But when nighttime came, the house felt different. The friendly grandfather clock in the hall went "BONG!" so loudly it made Leo jump. A branch from the big oak tree tapped on the window, like a spooky finger going *tap, tap, tap*.

Leo snuggled deeper under the covers, hugging Barnaby the bear. The hallway light cast a long, strange shadow on the wall. It twisted and wiggled and looked just like a long, slithery snake. Leo squeezed his eyes shut tight.

The bedroom door creaked open, and Grandma peeked in. "I thought you and Barnaby might be thirsty," she said softly. She saw Leo’s worried face. "Ah," she said. "It sounds like the house is telling its nighttime stories."

She sat on the bed. "That clock is just clearing its throat," she explained. "And the old oak tree is waving goodnight." She pointed to the shadow. "And that's just the sleepy lamp cord." Leo peeked over his blanket. "It's a little scary," he whispered.

"I know just the thing," Grandma said with a twinkle in her eye. "We need to build a Fortress of Bravery!" They took the big quilt from the bed and draped it over two chairs, making a perfect, cozy tent.

They crawled inside with their glasses of milk and a flashlight. Grandma turned on the flashlight and made funny shadow puppets on the roof of the fort. She made a bunny, a dog, and a silly-looking bird. Leo giggled.

From inside their fortress, the house didn't seem scary at all. The *BONG* of the clock was just a funny bass drum, and the *tap, tap, tap* of the tree was a friendly rhythm. Tucked in the warm glow of the flashlight, Leo felt his fizzy tummy calm down.

The next morning, Leo woke up in the big bed, feeling proud. He had been brave! He had conquered the nighttime noises. When he gave Grandma a goodbye hug, he whispered, "Can I have another sleepover in our fortress soon?"
