The Mystery of the Missing Hamster

Ms. Lily's third-grade class had a very special friend: a tiny, fluffy hamster named Pip. Pip lived in a cozy cage in the corner of the classroom, always busy running on his wheel or munching on seeds. Everyone loved Pip.

One sunny Tuesday morning, the class arrived, chattering excitedly. But when they looked at Pip's cage, their smiles disappeared. The cage door was open, and Pip was gone! Ms. Lily looked puzzled, and a hush fell over the room.

Sage, who loved reading mystery books, decided to become a detective. She pulled out her small notebook and a pencil from her backpack. "Every good detective needs to find clues," she whispered to herself, feeling very determined.

Sage began her search right around Pip's empty cage. She carefully looked under the table, behind the water bottle, and then, under the cage itself! There, sparkling on the floor, was a tiny, shiny button. "First clue!" she thought.

Sage remembered that her classmate, Indigo, often wore clothes with sparkly buttons. She found Indigo drawing quietly at her desk, concentrating on a colorful picture. "Have you seen Pip?" Sage asked softly. Indigo shook her head, but Sage noticed something important.

One of Indigo's sleeves had a missing button, and the thread hanging from it perfectly matched the button Sage had found! "This button," Sage said, holding it up. Indigo gasped. "Oh no! I was holding Pip yesterday, and he wiggled so much, my button must have popped off!"

"So Pip was with you, but where did he go?" Sage asked, her detective mind racing. Indigo pointed to a corner of the room. "He ran right under Kix's backpack when the bell rang for dismissal yesterday! I tried to catch him, but Kix was already leaving."

Sage walked over to Kix's backpack. It was a big, sporty backpack, sitting on the floor near the cubbies. She carefully reached down and lifted the backpack, hoping to find another clue, or even Pip himself!

And there, nestled in a forgotten lunchbox that had been left open inside the backpack, was Pip! He was happily munching on a piece of carrot, looking very comfortable. Kix had accidentally packed him up when he left school!

Everyone cheered when Sage brought Pip, safe and sound, back to his cage. The Mystery of the Missing Hamster was solved! Sage felt proud to be a detective, and Pip was happy to be back home with his friends.
