Mia loved Saturday mornings. They meant pancakes! But not just any pancakes. These were "Boundary Pancakes," a special tradition she shared with her mom, Sam.
Today, Mia was in charge of the sprinkles. "More, more!" she giggled, shaking the bottle over her pancake until it was a rainbow mountain.
Sam smiled. "Wow, that's a lot of sprinkles, sweetie! Remember, we each get our own pancake, and we decide how many sprinkles go on ours. That's a boundary."
Mia looked at her mom's pancake. It had just a few sprinkles, neatly placed. "But what if I want some of YOUR sprinkles?" Mia asked, reaching out a tiny finger.
"Ah," said Sam, "that's where our boundary comes in. My pancake is my boundary. I decide what goes on it, and I decide who can have a bite. You can always ask, but I get to say yes or no."
Mia pulled her hand back. "So, if I don't want you to take my sprinkles, I can say no?" she asked, her brow furrowed in thought.
"Exactly!" Sam nodded. "Your body is your boundary. Your toys are your boundary. Your feelings are your boundary. You get to decide what feels right for you."
Later that day, Mia was playing with her favorite doll, Lily. Her friend, Leo, wanted to play too. "Can I hold Lily?" Leo asked, reaching for the doll.
Mia remembered the pancakes. "No, not right now, Leo," she said gently. "Lily is my boundary. Maybe we can play with the blocks instead?"
Leo nodded. "Okay!" And they built the tallest block tower ever. Mia felt happy and strong, knowing her boundaries, just like her mom had taught her with the Boundary Pancakes.
